ERBIL (Kurdistan24)—According to international diplomatic sources, the United Nations Security Council plans to hold an emergency closed-door meeting on Monday at Russia's request to discuss the developing situation in Syria.
Agence France-Presse reported that the meeting, which is planned for Monday evening, will particularly concentrate on evaluating and assessing the repercussions of the Assad regime's downfall and the ensuing political shift in Syria.
A source from the Russian presidency confirmed Sunday evening that President Bashar al-Assad and his family have been given humanitarian asylum in Russia and are currently in Moscow.
This political disclosure comes after Assad's exit from Damascus during the opposition’s controlled and fairly nonviolent seizure of the Syrian capital early Sunday morning.
The Russian presidential source also specified that opposition forces have assured Moscow regarding the protection of Russian diplomatic missions and military personnel that are stationed in Syria.
This suggested that there might have been a degree of coordination in managing the transition.
These developments mark a crucial stage in Syria's political scene, with the international community now turning to focus on the consequences of this sudden change in leadership after Assad's 24-year rule.
The imminent Security Council session is believed to be crucial in determining the international response to Syria's political change.
