Turkey grants DEM Party delegation permission to meet PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan
DEM Party parliamentarians Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan are expected to visit Ocalan at Imrali prison on Dec. 28 or Dec. 29, marking a significant development in ongoing political dialogue efforts.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Turkish Ministry of Justice has approved a request from the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) to meet with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan, the party announced on Friday.
DEM Party parliamentarians Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan are expected to visit Ocalan at Imrali prison on Dec. 28 or Dec. 29, marking a significant development in ongoing political dialogue efforts.
The request for the meeting was formally submitted on Dec. 3, when a DEM Party delegation, accompanied by dozens of politicians and activists, visited the Turkish Ministry of Justice, urging officials to facilitate communication with Ocalan.
This approval follows the Oct. 23 visit by Omer Ocalan, a DEM Party MP and Abdullah Ocalan's nephew, who met with the PKK leader at Imrali prison. That meeting marked the first contact between Ocalan and his family in over two and a half years.
The DEM Party views these visits as crucial steps in addressing ongoing issues concerning Kurdish rights and political representation in Turkey. The meetings come at a time of heightened political sensitivity, as the government navigates internal security challenges and seeks to maintain dialogue with Kurdish political factions.
