ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Monday, Iraq's General Meteorological and Seismological Authority announced that a polar cold wave is set to sweep across the Kurdistan Region and western Iraq before the end of this week.
The weather authority also suggested that temperatures are expected to drop and reach freezing levels with frost conditions.
As stated by the authority's forecast, the cold front will arrive Thursday and Friday, with temperatures in the Kurdistan Region's governorates, central and western Iraq dropping to 0°C and below during the morning hours.
The authority pointed out that the impacts of this dry and cold wave will also extend to southern Iraq and some neighboring countries.
The Iraqi Meteorological Authority also reported that "intermittent rain is expected this Monday evening and Tuesday in various areas of the Kurdistan Region, Nineveh and Anbar governorates, and several other areas in central Iraq due to cloud formations."
The Kurdistan Region and Iraq normally experience cold winters, but polar cold waves can be specifically challenging for the region's infrastructure and population.
Such weather events could impact the daily routine of citizens across the Kurdistan Region, particularly in agricultural areas.
Also, the cold season can be especially difficult for displaced persons and those living in camps or who have inadequate housing.
The region's mountainous topography, particularly in the Kurdistan Region, can cause varying severity of winter conditions across different areas.
