ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw held a press conference on Sunday to outline the government's ongoing efforts to protect the environment in Erbil, following an order from Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The announcement came after a crucial meeting at the governor's office, attended by representatives from the districts, security forces, police, and traffic authorities, as well as officials from the Erbil Municipality and the Erbil Environmental Office.

Khoshnaw reaffirmed the commitment to enforcing the Prime Minister’s directives and emphasized the urgency of tackling environmental pollution in the city. He noted that two years ago, discussions revealed the presence of approximately 200 illegal refineries operating in Erbil province, contributing significantly to the region's environmental degradation. These refineries, which have persisted since a previous count of 138, remain a key concern for local authorities.

The governor announced that strict actions would be taken against those responsible for environmental pollution, including the closure of illegal refineries, arrests, and prosecution. "Any place that causes environmental pollution will be held accountable," Khoshnaw declared, adding that numerous individuals have already been arrested for their involvement in polluting activities.

Additionally, Khoshnaw addressed the issue of noise and pollution from generators, stating that operators must resolve these environmental concerns or face accountability. The governor's remarks underscore a renewed focus on improving Erbil's environmental standards and ensuring that all responsible parties are held accountable.
