President Masoud Barzani can play in unifying the Kurdish position in the region, says Mazloum Abdi
Abdi revealed that his recent meeting with President Barzani was aimed at addressing multiple concerns, including halting Turkish attacks and resolving ongoing tensions between the SDF and Turkey.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a recent televised interview with Al-Arabiya, Mazloum Abdi, the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), highlighted the significant role that President Masoud Barzani can play in unifying the Kurdish position in the region. Abdi emphasized that President Barzani’s influence could help bring together Kurdish factions and provide a unified front in negotiations, particularly in dealing with Damascus.
Abdi revealed that his recent meeting with President Barzani was aimed at addressing multiple concerns, including halting Turkish attacks and resolving ongoing tensions between the SDF and Turkey. He expressed confidence that President Barzani’s well-established relations with Turkey could be instrumental in mediating and finding a solution to these issues. “I have faith in President Masoud Barzani,” Abdi stressed.
The SDF commander also discussed the situation in Syria, noting the importance of ensuring Kurdish rights and securing their representation in the future of Syria. “Kurdish unity is essential for presenting a single delegation to Damascus,” Abdi stated, emphasizing the need for cohesive political action.
On the subject of Iranian involvement, Abdi firmly stated that the SDF has no contact with Iran and does not rely on Iranian support. He rejected any suggestion of receiving weaponry from Iran, adding that the SDF is developing its own anti-drone technologies and has successfully downed six Turkish aircraft to date.
Abdi also discussed his relationship with Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, expressing optimism about his recent positive statements.
The SDF commander reiterated his support for the continued presence of US forces in Syria, highlighting their potential role in resolving conflicts, particularly those between the SDF and Turkey. He also emphasized that the SDF remains committed to being part of a future Syrian army and plans to integrate into Syria’s military structure, though it has not yet made decisions regarding weapons transfers to other groups.
Abdi also raised concerns about the mistreatment of the Kurdish people, particularly the misidentification of Kurds as Arabs on official documents, a violation of Kurdish identity that he described as a longstanding issue.
