ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has intensified efforts to combat environmental pollution, taking legal actions against violators, including the activation of a hotline for citizens to report environmental hazards.
According to Dilshad Hirani, director of Erbil's environment office, the hotline has led to a surge in reports, with residents sending photos and videos of smoke emissions from generators and vehicles contributing to pollution. "Based on the evidence, our teams are conducting direct inspections," Hirani stated on Wednesday.
In less than 20 days, seven generator owners have been referred to court, while three others have been penalized. Additionally, 50 generator owners were mandated to make necessary environmental repairs.
Several vehicle owners have also been reported to the Erbil Traffic Directorate for excessive smoke emissions, and fines have been issued to restaurants and individuals caught burning waste.
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a special meeting on Jan. 12, 2025, to address air pollution concerns in Erbil and Duhok provinces. He emphasized that environmental protection is a key priority for the government and called for collective responsibility in preserving Kurdistan’s natural beauty.
