ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has called for the reinstatement of the international monitoring mission, initially established under a UN Security Council resolution in April 2012, to oversee tense regions in Syria, including the Tishrin Dam, southern Kobani, Rojava (northern Syria).

The administration stated that the mission's return is crucial to halting ongoing clashes and restoring civil peace in the country.

In a statement released on Friday, the administration emphasized Syria’s critical historical moment, underlining the urgent need for reconstruction and rectification of past governance failures.

It noted that the 14-year-long conflict has severely damaged the country's social fabric, exacerbated displacement, and forced millions of Syrians to flee their homes.

The statement also highlighted the continued fighting in several areas, including the Syrian coast and Tishrin Dam, alongside rising rhetoric of hatred and revenge between communities.

It highlighted that millions of Syrians continue to live as refugees abroad or remain internally displaced (IDPs), living under dire humanitarian conditions. Despite limited resources.

The Autonomous Administration emphasized the need to create conditions for the safe and voluntary return of displaced individuals to their homes. It affirmed ongoing efforts to coordinate with authorities in Damascus to facilitate this return but noted that no legal assurances or security guarantees have been provided thus far.

Expressing concern over the ongoing instability, the administration argued that Syria cannot achieve lasting peace while hostilities persist. It pointed out that the Damascus government, with the collapse of state institutions, is unable to ensure security or protect vital infrastructure nationwide.

As a result, it has called for the return of the UN’s international monitoring mission to oversee conflict zones, particularly around the Tishrin Dam, to prevent further escalation and support the safe return of displaced populations.
