ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Authorities in Iraq have uncovered two mass graves containing the remains of Yezidi and Iraqi victims, more than a decade after the Sinjar massacres. A total of 32 Yezidi bodies were found in one grave, while another 21 victims were discovered in a separate mass grave in the Hammam Alil sub-district. The remains have now been identified and handed over to their families, officials confirmed.

According to Kurdistan24 reporter Darman Baadre, the bodies were recovered following extensive forensic investigations and documentation efforts.

Yasmin Munzir, head of the mass graves department in Baghdad's forensic medicine, stated, “Today, the first convoy of bodies of those killed in Hammam Alil will be handed over to their relatives. Official documents have been signed, people have come to collect the bodies, and we are assisting them.”

Authorities confirmed that two convoys will transport the remains—one carrying the 21 victims from Hammam Alil and the other delivering 32 Yezidi victims from Sinjar. This marks the seventh official transfer of Sinjar victims’ remains to their families.

Khalid Mohammed Tahtouh, director of the Hammam Alil sub-district, provided further details, stating, “We have identified 21 bodies of police officers and civilians who were assassinated by ISIS.”

The discovery underscores the continued efforts to identify and return the remains of those killed in ISIS-led atrocities, as Iraq works to bring justice and closure to the victims' families.
