ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted a precision airstrike in Northwest Syria on Friday, killing Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, a senior leadership facilitator of Hurras al-Din (HaD), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, the command announced.

The strike is part of ongoing U.S. efforts to dismantle terrorist networks that pose threats to the United States, its allies, and regional partners. CENTCOM emphasized its commitment to preventing terror groups from planning and executing attacks, particularly in an area known to harbor extremist elements.

"We will relentlessly pursue and destroy terrorist threats, no matter their location, to protect our homeland and our allies and partners," said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command.

Hurras al-Din

Hurras al-Din emerged in 2018 as a splinter group of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which itself evolved from Al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch, Jabhat al-Nusra. Unlike HTS, which distanced itself from Al-Qaeda’s global ambitions, HaD remains loyal to the terrorist network’s ideology and leadership, focusing on launching external attacks and maintaining a presence in Idlib and other contested areas of Northwest Syria.

The group has long been a target of U.S. counterterrorism operations, as it continues to pose a significant risk to international security. The strike on Bayraqdar underscores Washington’s strategy of targeting high-value individuals to weaken jihadist networks and prevent their resurgence.

Regional Security Implications

Syria’s northwest, particularly Idlib province, remains a volatile battleground where multiple factions, including radical Islamist groups, operate amid ongoing conflicts involving Syrian government forces, Russian airpower, Turkish-backed militias, and Kurdish-led entities. The region's complex security environment makes it a persistent concern for counterterrorism operations.

This latest strike is part of a broader U.S. military campaign aimed at neutralizing threats beyond the immediate battlefield, reinforcing its commitment to preventing extremist groups from reestablishing strongholds and launching attacks against Western and regional interests.
