ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has made significant progress in its efforts to provide 24-hour electricity across the Kurdistan Region, with the latest phase of the Runaki Project extending uninterrupted national electricity to four more neighborhoods in Erbil.

On Friday, the KRG’s Ministry of Electricity announced that the neighborhoods of Nishtiman, Raperin, Nawroz, and Mardin—comprising approximately 14,000 subscribers—have been successfully integrated into the project, ensuring round-the-clock power supply for residents.

According to the Ministry, the latest expansion builds upon previous successes, bringing the total number of connected neighborhoods in Erbil to 17, benefiting 65,000 subscribers and approximately 250,000 residents.

The earlier phases of the project had already provided 24-hour electricity to 13 neighborhoods, including Shadi, New Bahari, Naznaz, Bakhtiari, Sarbasti, Kuran, Kurdistan, Majidawa, Rizgari, Bahar, Krekaran, Azadi, and Rasti, covering 51,000 subscribers.

The Ministry also confirmed that technical work is underway to implement the project in Sulaimani and Duhok, ensuring that several neighborhoods in these provinces will soon experience similar benefits.

The implementation of the Runaki Project has led to the shutdown of approximately 350 private generators in Erbil, contributing to a cleaner environment, reduced noise pollution, and the elimination of multiple electricity bills.

Residents are now receiving stable power with full voltage and no limitations on amperage, simplifying electricity usage and billing processes.

The initiative was launched under the directive of KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who has pledged that within two years, the entire Kurdistan Region will have 24-hour electricity.

The Prime Minister formally introduced the Light Project on Oct. 17, 2024, during his visit to the Shadi neighborhood in Erbil, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring energy security for all residents.

With the ongoing expansion of the Runaki Project, the KRG continues to make strides toward achieving sustainable and reliable electricity for the entire region, reinforcing its vision for a modernized and efficient power sector.
