ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iranian Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad and Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fazel met in Tehran on Tuesday to discuss deepening strategic cooperation in the energy sector, as both countries seek to bolster regional energy security and economic integration.

According to Iran’s official oil news agency, Shana, the two ministers emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral ties, underlining the longstanding historical, cultural, religious, and political connections between Iran and Iraq.

The talks focused on enhancing collaboration in key sectors, including oil, gas, and electricity. Both sides expressed interest in launching new energy projects and improving existing infrastructure to better serve the interests of citizens in both countries.

The meeting comes as Iraq faces growing pressure to diversify its energy sources amid US sanctions that have impacted Iran’s ability to supply electricity and gas. Iran has traditionally been a major energy provider for Iraq, particularly during peak summer demand.

Paknejad is expected to continue discussions during a visit to Baghdad aimed at addressing ongoing challenges and exploring alternative mechanisms for energy cooperation.

The visit reflects broader efforts by Tehran and Baghdad to maintain strong ties and coordinate regional policies amid shifting geopolitical and economic dynamics.
