Lone Attacker in Custody
Speaking to the press, Florian Abbenseth, a spokesperson for Hamburg police, confirmed the arrest of the suspect at the scene.
“She allowed herself to be taken into custody without any resistance,” Abbenseth said, noting that the investigation is moving “at full speed” and that no motive has yet been established.
Authorities believe the woman acted alone, and early indications suggest she may be suffering from a psychological condition.
“Based on information we currently have, we are investigating the possibility of a psychiatric emergency,” Abbenseth added.
Chaos at the Station
As Reported from our reporter, the Federal Police Department in Hanover, which oversees Hamburg, that the suspect targeted commuters, stabbing multiple individuals on and around the platforms.
Some of the wounded were reportedly treated aboard stationary trains at the station, as emergency teams cordoned off four platforms and rushed victims to nearby hospitals.
The German railway company Deutsche Bahn announced delays and diversions to long-distance services due to the ongoing investigation, stating on its official X account that “four platforms have been closed” as authorities continue their work.
A Nation on Edge
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his shock over the attack during a call with Hamburg’s mayor, according to a statement from his spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.
“The Chancellor extends his deepest solidarity to the victims and their families,” the statement read.
This stabbing follows a string of violent incidents across Germany. Just last Sunday, four people were injured in a knife attack at a bar in the city of Bielefeld, which is now being investigated by federal prosecutors on suspicion of being an Islamist-inspired assault.
The Hamburg attack underscores growing security concerns in the country, with law enforcement agencies under pressure to reassess preventive measures amid a rise in knife-related violence.
As investigations into Friday’s attack continue, questions remain over the suspect’s mental state and whether the incident has broader implications for public safety policy across Germany’s major urban centers.
