ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein issued a stark warning on Saturday about the consequences of ongoing regional escalation, particularly in light of the Israel-Iran conflict, cautioning that the situation could spiral into widespread chaos with severe ramifications for the peoples of the Middle East.

The remarks came during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, held on the sidelines of the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, according to a statement released by Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Iraq Pushes for Diplomatic Mediation

The Iraqi minister reiterated that “continued escalation foretells the outbreak of large-scale chaos, the costs of which will be devastating for the entire region.” Hussein stressed the need for de-escalation and urged regional cooperation to prevent further deterioration in regional security.

He also referenced the diplomatic initiative presented by Iraq at the emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers, which calls for the formation of a joint Arab-Islamic committee tasked with engaging all involved parties to reach a ceasefire agreement and facilitate a return to the negotiating table.

Syrian-Iraqi Bilateral Talks

During their talks, the two sides also discussed the latest political and economic developments in Syria and explored avenues to deepen bilateral relations in a way that benefits the peoples of both countries.

Focus on the Israel-Iran War

The meeting placed significant emphasis on the ongoing Israeli military campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its implications for the stability of the broader region. Hussein underlined the urgency of concerted diplomatic efforts to shield the region from further military confrontation.

As diplomatic activity intensifies amid a volatile regional backdrop, Baghdad has positioned itself as a key actor calling for dialogue and restraint, warning of the high price of continued escalation.
