ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Prominent Erbil businessman Dr. Osman Ismail Nanakali is constructing a modern mental health hospital in the Kurdistan Region’s capital, with over 200 beds—most of them dedicated to female patients.

On Saturday, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, accompanied by Musa Ahmed, President of the Barzani Charity Foundation, philanthropist Dr. Nanakali, and a team of engineers and health ministry administrative officials, paid a visit to the facility to observe the final stages of construction.

During a press conference following the visit, Governor Khoshnaw praised all the teams involved, especially Dr. Nanakali, for executing this vital healthcare project. He emphasized that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), under the direct leadership of the Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, has taken significant steps to facilitate philanthropic and investment efforts, enabling donors and businesspeople to deliver essential services to the region through charitable initiatives.

The Erbil National Mental Health Hospital is being built to international standards and includes over 200 patient rooms. A significant portion of these facilities will be allocated specifically for women, addressing a long-standing gap in mental health services for female patients.

Spanning a total area of 35,000 square meters, the hospital comprises six main floors in addition to dedicated service and administrative levels. The complex includes two specialized wings for women—one for long-term psychiatric care and another for acute cases. Similar facilities are designated for men. The total area for patient wings amounts to 15,000 square meters, with each wing consisting of either one or two floors.

Notably, 60% of the hospital area is designed as green space, based on global findings that exposure to nature positively impacts mental health recovery and well-being.
