Israel Urges E3 to Trigger Snapback Sanctions on Iran After Nuclear Watchdog Suspension

“The time to activate the Snapback mechanism is now!” Sa’ar said in response to what he described as a dangerous escalation by Tehran. “The international community must act decisively now and utilize all means at its disposal to stop Iranian nuclear ambitions,” he added.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Wednesday called on Germany, France, and the United Kingdom to immediately reinstate international sanctions on Iran, following Tehran’s decision to suspend cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog.

“The time to activate the Snapback mechanism is now!” Sa’ar wrote on the social media platform X, “Iran has just issued a scandalous announcement about suspending its cooperation with the IAEA. This is a complete renunciation of all its international nuclear obligations and commitments.”

Sa’ar urged the three European signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal — commonly referred to as the E3 — to act decisively in response to what he described as a dangerous escalation by Tehran. “The international community must act decisively now and utilize all means at its disposal to stop Iranian nuclear ambitions,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian formally approved a law suspending Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a move seen as a major escalation in Tehran’s standoff with the West over its nuclear program. The measure, according to AFP, was enacted in response to recent tensions with Israel and follows the aftermath of last month’s Iran-Israel conflict.

Iranian state television reported that the new law is now officially in effect, representing one of the most drastic steps Iran has taken to limit international oversight of its nuclear activities. The suspension of cooperation is expected to further isolate Iran diplomatically and complicate efforts to revive the stalled 2015 nuclear accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The "Snapback" mechanism referenced by Minister Sa’ar refers to a provision in the JCPOA that allows participants to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran in the event of significant non-compliance. Although the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018, the mechanism remains available to the E3 and other original signatories.

With growing concern over Iran’s accelerating nuclear program and its withdrawal from international monitoring frameworks, calls for punitive measures are expected to mount in the coming days.
