Rapid Water Supply Project in Erbil Enters Testing Phase Ahead of Full Launch

The KRG's $480M water project, led by PM Barzani, will provide 20,000m³/hour - covering 60% of Erbil's needs. This strategic infrastructure upgrade demonstrates the government's commitment to urban stability and improved public services amid growing demand.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Governor of Erbil, Omed Khoshnaw, announced on Friday the commencement of testing and initial flushing operations for a vital pipeline within the Rapid Water Supply Project, a major infrastructure undertaking aimed at significantly boosting water delivery to the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

According to Khoshnaw, technical teams have begun pumping and flushing water through the newly laid pipeline to ensure the system’s safety and cleanliness before distributing potable water to homes. “This preliminary stage involves directing water outside the network as a precautionary measure until the integrity of the entire system is confirmed,” the governor said.

First Water Deliveries to Target Key Districts

Once the testing phase concludes successfully, clean water will be delivered within days to neighborhoods located between Rashkin and Koya Streets, specifically covering the fourth, fifth, and sixth municipal districts outside Erbil’s 120-meter ring road. These areas are among the first to benefit from the enhanced supply provided by this strategic project.

Major Investment to Secure Erbil’s Water Future

The project, which is being executed under the direction of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, carries a budget of approximately $480 million. When fully operational, the system is expected to supply 20,000 cubic meters of clean water per hour — meeting nearly 60% of the city’s total demand.

The remaining 40% of Erbil’s water needs will continue to be met through the existing supply infrastructure, specifically the Ifraz 1, 2, and 3 projects.

A Strategic Step Toward Urban Stability

This initiative represents a cornerstone of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s broader agenda to strengthen public service delivery, particularly in the face of growing urban demand and climatic challenges. It underscores the government’s commitment to advancing essential infrastructure and improving living standards for Erbil’s residents.
