ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In an emotional and unprecedented move, Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 jersey worn by Portuguese international Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in northwest Spain last week.

The club announced the decision via its official website, stating that the number will be withdrawn from use across all levels, including the men’s team, women’s squad, and youth academy. The decision was made following consultations with Jota’s widow Rute and his family.

“A Unique Honor for a Unique Person”

Michael Edwards, CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group, which owns Liverpool FC, described the tribute as a landmark moment in the club’s history.

“I believe this is the first time in the history of Liverpool Football Club that an individual has been granted such an honor,” Edwards said. “So, we can say this is a unique tribute for a unique and wonderful person. By retiring the number, we make it eternal – and thus, unforgettable.”

“Jota joined us in 2020, won with us as No. 20, and wore that number with honor, distinction, and love. For Liverpool Football Club, he will remain the No. 20 forever,” he added.

A Life and Career Cut Short

Jota, aged 28, died alongside his brother André Silva – who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division – in a tragic traffic accident on July 3.

The news of Jota’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from the global football community. Fans, players, and clubs around the world have expressed their condolences, remembering him as a player of immense talent and a person of profound humility and kindness.

By retiring the number 20, Liverpool has etched Jota’s legacy permanently into the club’s history – a rare and powerful gesture that underscores the deep impact he had both on and off the pitch.
