PM Barzani to Inaugurate First Phase of Erbil’s Rapid Water Delivery Project on Sunday
Designed to fully meet Erbil’s water needs, the project will supply 480,000 cubic meters of potable water per day through a network of major pipelines reaching every neighborhood in the capital.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is set to inaugurate the first phase of Erbil’s ambitious Rapid Water Delivery Project on Sunday, launching an infrastructure initiative that aims to permanently resolve the city’s water shortages and ensure access to clean drinking water for the next 30 years.
Designed to fully meet Erbil’s water needs, the project will supply 480,000 cubic meters of potable water per day through a network of major pipelines reaching every neighborhood in the capital. Authorities say the plan will eliminate water shortages 100 percent across the city upon full completion.
With an implementation period of less than 550 days, the project is expected to deliver 21,000 cubic meters of water per hour, pumped through four main transmission lines spanning key urban corridors such as the 120-meter and 150-meter roads.
The water, sourced from the Great Zab River, will be treated in line with World Health Organization (WHO) and Iraqi public health standards, including advanced filtration and chlorination procedures to ensure safety and quality.
This infrastructure milestone is part of a broader strategy by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to modernize urban utilities, reduce environmental stress, and respond to the challenges of climate change and urban expansion.
