Tsunami Forces Evacuation in Russia’s Kuril Islands, Sweeps Away Buildings
The powerful tsunami, which followed seismic activity in the region, swept away structures along the coastline, though no casualties were immediately reported.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — All residents of Russia’s northern Kuril Islands district were safely evacuated after a tsunami struck the region on Wednesday, causing flooding and destroying buildings, according to AFP.
"Everyone was evacuated. There was enough time, a whole hour. So everyone was evacuated, all the people are in the tsunami safety zone," Mayor Alexander Ovsyannikov said during a crisis meeting with officials.
The powerful tsunami, which followed seismic activity in the region, swept away structures along the coastline, though no casualties were immediately reported. The Kuril Islands, located in Russia’s Far East, are particularly vulnerable to seismic and volcanic activity due to their location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
Authorities have not yet released a detailed assessment of the damage, but emergency response teams remain on high alert as aftershocks continue to rattle the area.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over preparedness in remote and disaster-prone regions, though the swift evacuation reportedly averted potential loss of life.
