Drone Attacks, ISIS Threats Top Agenda in Kurdistan President’s Meeting with British Admiral

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, Senior Adviser to the UK Ministry of Defense for the Middle East and North Africa, along with an accompanying delegation and the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, on Wednesday, according to a statement published on the official website of the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

The meeting, attended by the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces, focused on the overall security situation in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the wider region. Both sides discussed ongoing threats from ISIS, the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad, and broader regional challenges.

President Barzani reiterated that ISIS remains a serious and ongoing threat to the stability of Iraq and Syria. He also condemned recent drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region, especially those targeting vital energy infrastructure. “Attacks on Kurdistan’s energy infrastructure are a threat to and harm the entire Iraqi economy,” Barzani warned, stressing the need to curtail such assaults.

Vice Admiral Ahlgren reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing London’s strong interest in maintaining peace and stability across the region. “The UK fully supports the security and stability of Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the broader region,” he said.

The meeting also covered key regional issues, including the federal system in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Iraq’s relations with neighboring countries, developments in Syria, Kurdish and minority rights there, and the latest updates on the peace process in Türkiye.
