ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A new ecological and cultural Grand Park is set to be built in Erbil in a major strategic initiative designed to reflect the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Kurdistan Region, the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism announced on Wednesday. To realize this vision, the ministry is launching an international design competition, inviting engineering firms to develop proposals for a landmark that will serve as a prominent sustainable and cultural space in the capital.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry officially confirmed the plan to construct the park.

The goal of this strategic initiative, as outlined by the ministry, is "to create a prominent ecological park that serves as a sustainable, cultural, and ecological space." The ministry emphasized that the core vision for this significant project is to create a space that "will reflect the rich nature and culture of the Kurdistan Region."

To find the best possible design for the Grand Park, the Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism’s General Directorate of Urban Planning is holding a formal competition. The ministry has extended an open invitation to all interested consulting engineering firms, both local and international, to participate in the competition by submitting a design proposal for the new park.

The ministry has established clear terms and a process for participation. According to the announcement, any registered engineering firm interested in competing must visit the General Directorate of Urban Planning in person to receive the official program and detailed participation guidelines.

A deadline has been set for Aug. 20, 2025, for firms to collect these essential materials. The directorate will be open for this purpose during official working hours, from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

To incentivize high-quality and innovative submissions from top-tier firms, the ministry’s statement confirmed that cash prizes will be awarded to the designs selected as the top three winners of the competition, ensuring a competitive and creative process for what is poised to become a significant new landmark for the city of Erbil.
