ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The second phase of the Erbil Emergency Water Project is scheduled for completion by mid-November, Ari Ahmed, General Director of the Kurdistan Region’s Water and Sewage Directorate, told Kurdistan24 on Tuesday.
Ahmed noted that Erbil currently relies on 1,380 water wells, but more than 1,000 of them are expected to be closed by 2026 as part of a plan to preserve groundwater resources.
Once completed, the project will supply clean drinking water to 248,000 households through a 411-kilometer distribution network.
The initiative was launched last year when Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani laid the foundation stone. It is being implemented by a local company at a cost of $480 million.
The second phase will cover neighborhoods located between 120- and 150-meter streets, including Ankawa, 32 Park, Ankawa Kuran, Bahirka, Gird Jutyar, Sebardan, Shaways, and Pirzin.
