Iraqi National Security Advisor, U.S. Envoy Discuss Iraq-Iran Security Pact

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji on Saturday discussed the recently signed Iraq-Iran security memorandum with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Iraq Steven Fagin during a meeting in Baghdad, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA), citing a press release from al-Araji's office.
Al-Araji outlined the details of the agreement, which he said focuses on strengthening border controls to enhance regional security, prevent smuggling, and curb cross-border infiltration. He emphasized that Iraq’s policies are guided by its “supreme national interests” and reaffirmed that the country acts as a sovereign, independent state pursuing balanced relations with regional and international partners.
The discussions also covered ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States, with both sides stressing the importance of ongoing cooperation in combating terrorism and exchanging intelligence and expertise.
According to INA, Fagin reiterated Washington’s support for Iraq’s balanced foreign policy and praised the government’s efforts in addressing the issue of displaced persons. He also revealed that an international conference will soon be held in New York to encourage countries to repatriate their nationals from Syria’s al-Hol camp and bring a lasting resolution to the humanitarian crisis there.
