Kurdish Taekwondo Athlete Wins World Silver in South Korea

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Kurdish taekwondo athlete Yelda Muhammed secured the silver medal at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang Championship in Seoul, South Korea, delivering a standout performance in one of the world's largest taekwondo competitions.

The championship brought together nearly 6,000 athletes from more than 60 countries. Following an intensive period of preparation, Muhammed finished second in the Power Breaking category to claim the world runner-up title.

She celebrated the achievement while carrying the Kurdistan flag, describing the moment as a source of pride not only for herself but for her people.

The delegation competed under the name Kurdistan Team, led by coach Hemin Mehdi Qadir.

The squad consisted of eight male athletes and one female athlete representing Erbil, Duhok, Kirkuk, and the Soran administration.

Team members emphasized that competing under the name and flag of Kurdistan served as a major source of motivation throughout the championship.

Speaking to Kurdistan24 after the medal ceremony, Muhammed reflected on her achievement:

"I thank God for allowing me to achieve this success after tremendous hard work and dedication. Standing on the podium with the Kurdistan flag was an indescribable feeling. At that moment, I felt the support of an entire nation behind me. I dedicate this achievement to my homeland. I also extend my deepest gratitude to my husband, my family, and our esteemed coach, Hemin Mehdi Qadir, who stood behind us like a mountain and supported me throughout this journey."

Muhammed's achievement was widely welcomed, with many viewing her success as another demonstration of the determination and strength of Kurdish women on the international sporting stage.
