Coalition Shoots Down Three Explosive Drones Over Erbil
Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism says three explosive-laden drones were intercepted in Erbil’s airspace without causing casualties.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Coalition forces intercepted and destroyed three explosive-laden drones over Erbil early Friday, according to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate, in the latest aerial incident targeting the Kurdistan Region.
The directorate said the drones were detected and intercepted in Erbil’s airspace between 2:17 a.m. and 2:25 a.m. on Aug. 14.
No Casualties Reported
In a statement, the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said the three drones were carrying explosives and were successfully neutralized by Coalition air defenses.
The interceptions caused no reported casualties, according to the directorate.
Residents in several parts of Erbil reported hearing explosions during the early-morning operation, while photographs and videos showing the interceptions were subsequently shared on social media.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information on the origin of the drones or identify their intended targets.
Attacks Persist Amid Regional Tensions
The incident comes amid a broader pattern of drone and missile attacks affecting the Kurdistan Region since the escalation of regional hostilities.
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani recently said in an interview with an Arabic-language media outlet that more than 1,000 drones had been launched toward the Region since the beginning of the regional conflict.
The repeated attacks have prompted Kurdish officials to call for stronger air defenses and greater action by Baghdad to prevent armed groups from using Iraqi territory to launch attacks.
Despite the frequency of attempted strikes, Coalition air-defense systems have intercepted numerous drones before they reached populated areas or strategic sites.
Friday’s interceptions add to the continuing security concerns surrounding Erbil, where authorities remain on heightened alert as regional tensions persist.
