Iraqi National Security Advisor Meets EU Envoy, Diplomats to Discuss Cooperation and Security

The meeting focused on strengthening friendship and cooperation between Iraq and the European Union and advancing their partnership in a way that serves Iraq’s interests.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aboudi met on Wednesday with Klemens Semtner, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, as well as ambassadors and chargés d’affaires from EU member states in Iraq, the Iraqi News Agency reported.

The meeting focused on strengthening friendship and cooperation between Iraq and the European Union and advancing their partnership in a way that serves Iraq’s interests.

Al-Aboudi reaffirmed the Iraqi government’s commitment to an open approach toward the international community. He said the government of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is implementing its program to establish close and balanced relations with friendly and neighboring countries, diversify Iraq’s economy, and attract foreign investment and international companies.

He said these efforts would contribute to improving the lives of Iraqi citizens, adding that the government is also implementing security measures aimed at restricting weapons to state institutions and strengthening security agreements with friendly countries.

According to the statement, Baghdad views a secure and stable environment as essential for economic reform and attracting international companies to operate in Iraq.

Al-Aboudi also stressed that the Iraqi Constitution does not permit the presence of armed groups that threaten the security of neighboring countries or the wider region.

For his part, Semtner reaffirmed the European Union’s determination to support the Iraqi government in implementing its ministerial program and reform agenda.

He said EU member states have longstanding historical ties with Iraq and value their relationship with the country.
