Pezeshkian Acknowledges Iran’s Economic Struggles as US Sanctions Intensify
Iranian president says government is working to tackle inflation, unemployment and declining living standards as Tehran faces mounting pressure from Washington
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged Sunday that Iranians are facing widespread economic and social difficulties, as the United States intensifies sanctions aimed at putting further pressure on Tehran.
“I understand we have many problems in society right now. We are trying to prevent these as much as we can,” Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast on Iranian state television, according to AFP.
His remarks came days after Washington announced a new sanctions campaign targeting Iran, with US officials vowing to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.
Pezeshkian blamed US President Donald Trump for what he described as a broad confrontation with Iran, saying the country was facing a “full-scale economic, military and security war.”
“He says he is imposing the most crushing and terrifying sanctions on Iran,” Pezeshkian said.
Iran has faced persistent economic difficulties in recent years, including high inflation, currency depreciation, unemployment and declining purchasing power. Economic hardship has repeatedly contributed to waves of public protests across the country.
Pezeshkian, who campaigned on promises to address Iran's economic challenges and improve living conditions, said his government was working to ease pressure on ordinary citizens.
“We are striving with all our hearts to overcome inflation, livelihood problems, unemployment, and to secure the future of the people, so that they can live with dignity and pride,” he said.
The president's acknowledgment comes as Tehran faces renewed pressure from Washington and growing economic challenges at home, further straining the Iranian government.
