Trump Says All Mines Cleared from Strait of Hormuz

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States Navy had removed or detonated all mines in international waters of the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington seeks to restore maritime traffic through the strategic waterway.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had been warned that any vessel laying new mines in the strait would be “immediately and systematically destroyed.”

“I have just been informed by the United States Navy that all mines have been removed and/or detonated from within the International Waters of the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote.

He added that the U.S. Space Force was monitoring the waterway, saying Washington had a “Zero Tolerance policy” toward any further mine-laying.

The announcement comes after months of severe disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz during the 2026 regional conflict. The waterway, which carries a major share of global oil shipments, has been heavily affected by the conflict and Iranian mining operations aimed at restricting maritime traffic.

The U.S. military also reported that it had targeted and destroyed 10 inactive Iranian minelaying boats, in an effort to prevent their use in future mining operations.

Despite Trump's announcement, maritime security concerns remain. Shipping agencies have warned that unmapped, damaged or drifting mines could continue to pose a severe threat to commercial vessels even after clearance operations.

Tanker traffic through the strait remains near zero, according to the report, with commercial insurers reluctant to provide coverage because of the continuing security risks.

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints. Its disruption has contributed to major uncertainty in global energy markets and shipping.
