PMF Checkpoint Attacked in Pirde, Leaving One Dead and Another Critically Wounded
A police source told Kurdistan24 that two men on a motorcycle carried out the attack before fleeing, as security forces launched an investigation.
Erbil (Kurdistan24) - An armed attack on a checkpoint belonging to the Turkmen Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Pirde left one member dead and another critically wounded early Thursday, according to a police source who spoke to Kurdistan24.
The attack occurred at around 2 a.m. inside the town of Pirde, the source said.
The deceased PMF member was identified as Ali Bahjat Hamid, while Junaid Ismat Bahjat was critically wounded in the attack.
According to police information, two men riding a motorcycle carried out the attack before fleeing toward an unknown location.
The attack comes against the backdrop of earlier strikes on PMF facilities across several Iraqi provinces during the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
On July 29, the PMF said joint US-Saudi airstrikes had targeted its official facilities in Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala and Diyala.
The PMF said the strikes killed at least 20 of its members and wounded 32 others. It also reported material damage to several facilities, vehicles, military equipment and other assets.
The group said specialized committees had been deployed to assess the full extent of the damage and compile comprehensive information, stressing that the announced casualty figures were preliminary and could rise as search operations and field assessments continued.
Following the July 29 strikes, Nineveh’s Provincial Council expressed concern over attacks targeting locations in the province and resulting casualties.
The council strongly condemned attacks targeting the security and sovereignty of Nineveh and Iraq and reaffirmed its rejection of using the province’s territory as a base for launching attacks against neighboring countries or targeting them in any way.
It said the position was aimed at preserving regional stability and protecting Iraq’s supreme national interests.
The council also extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
