PM Barzani, British Military Delegation Discuss Security, KRG-British Relations
The meeting, attended by the British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Holly Fair, focused on the latest security developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received a British military delegation led by Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the UK Defense Senior Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, on Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The meeting, attended by the British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region Holly Fair, focused on the latest security developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region.
Both sides underscored the importance of further strengthening historic relations, security coordination, and cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom.
Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s appreciation for the support and cooperation provided by the United Kingdom and the Global Coalition forces.
The meeting also addressed the need to reactivate the Kurdistan Region Parliament, form a new KRG cabinet, and resolve outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government of Iraq, based on respect for the Region’s constitutional status.
The United Kingdom provides extensive and ongoing diplomatic, military, and humanitarian support to the Kurdistan Region, acting as a key strategic ally through counter-terrorism cooperation, assistance with Peshmerga reform, and diplomatic mediation with Baghdad.
The British military advisors work alongside international partners to support the Ministry of the Peshmerga in unifying forces under a single command structure.
The UK has historically supplied intelligence, equipment, and training to local forces to counter the threat of ISIS and maintain regional stability.
