Trump Says US-Iran Talks Were ‘Very Productive’ at UN
“They had a very good meeting, a very productive meeting,” Trump told reporters, saying the talks lasted about three hours on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that US and Iranian officials held a “very good” and “very productive” meeting at the United Nations, hours after he warned that Iran could face annihilation if it fails to reach a deal to end the war.
“They had a very good meeting, a very productive meeting,” Trump told reporters, saying the talks lasted about three hours on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“They have another one scheduled in the very near future,” he added.
Trump’s comments came shortly after he told the UN General Assembly that he faced a “big decision” over whether to pursue an agreement that would allow Iran to rebuild or take military action against the Islamic Republic.
“I have a big decision to make,” Trump said, adding that he could either reach a deal with Iran or “annihilate the Islamic Republic” if negotiations fail.
Trump also said he believed a deal could be reached after the US midterm elections on November 3, arguing that Tehran was waiting to see the outcome of the vote.
The reported talks mark a new diplomatic development after months of conflict between Washington and Tehran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier indicated that Washington was open to engaging with Iranian officials during the UN gathering.
The conflict has also disrupted global energy markets and heightened concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for international oil shipments. Iran has separately signaled that it could discuss reopening the waterway as part of efforts to revive negotiations.
The 81st UN General Assembly is taking place in New York from September 22 to 28, bringing world leaders together amid the continuing US-Iran war and wider regional tensions.
