ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - When the first drops of rain meet the soil, the familiar earthy aroma rises into the air, carrying with it one of the season's most recognizable scents. Across much of the Kurdistan Region, that smell of rain will linger Friday as clouds, drizzle and moderate showers continue through much of the day.

The Kurdistan Region's General Directorate of Meteorology and Seismology said skies will range from partly cloudy to fully overcast, with intermittent drizzle and moderate rainfall expected across most areas.

Sulaimani province and the Soran Independent Administration are among the areas expected to receive continued rainfall.

The directorate said rain could become heavier in some eastern parts of the Kurdistan Region, with thunderstorms possible at times.

By Friday evening, however, the influence of the weather system is expected to weaken across the Region.

Temperatures are also forecast to fall by between one and two degrees Celsius compared with Thursday.

On Saturday, conditions are expected to become calmer, with skies generally partly cloudy. Light drizzle may still occur in mountainous areas and along the Region's borders.

Rain has already reached parts of the Garmian Administration.

The Kifri meteorological station recorded 5 millimeters of rainfall over two days, according to the directorate.

Among the provincial capitals, Erbil and Halabja are forecast to reach highs of 28°C, while Sulaimani is expected to remain cooler at 24°C and Duhok at 27°C.

Elsewhere, Zakho is forecast to reach 30°C, Akre and Soran 27°C, Chamchamal 26°C, and Pirmam 23°C.

The warmest conditions are expected in Garmian, where temperatures could reach 33°C.

Haji Omeran will remain the coolest location among those listed by the meteorological authorities, with a forecast high of 20°C.

The continuing rainfall comes with cooler air across much of the Region, while eastern and mountainous areas remain the most likely to experience stronger showers and occasional thunderstorms before conditions gradually ease later in the day.
