ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while making an outbound transit through the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), adding to a series of incidents involving commercial vessels in the strategic waterway.
The vessel’s master reported that the tanker was hit at 11:22 a.m. GMT while transiting the strait, according to UKMTO.
The impact caused a small fire and a blackout aboard the vessel. The fire was later extinguished, and the tanker resumed its journey, the maritime agency said.
No casualties or environmental impact were reported in connection with the incident.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while UKMTO advised vessels transiting the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
The agency did not identify the projectile or attribute responsibility for the strike in the information provided.
The incident came a day after a supertanker caught fire after being struck while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
The tanker involved in Thursday’s incident had a capacity of 2.5 million barrels and was traveling through the strait when it was struck, according to Fars.
Fars described the vessel as traveling “illegally” through the waterway and reported that it was hit about eight kilometers, or five miles, off the coast of Oman.
