ISIS Militants Attack PMF Base in Kirkuk’s Hawija, Destroy Surveillance Camera
The militants reportedly arrived at the PMF position on a motorcycle and targeted the military base before destroying the surveillance equipment.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Two suspected ISIS militants attacked a military base belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Kirkuk province’s Hawija district, destroying a thermal surveillance camera, according to Kurdistan24 correspondent Soran Kamaran.
The militants reportedly arrived at the PMF position on a motorcycle and targeted the military base before destroying the surveillance equipment.
Information obtained by Kurdistan24 indicates that the militants specifically targeted a thermal surveillance camera belonging to the Second Battalion of the PMF’s 61st Brigade.
A security source told Kurdistan24 that there were no casualties in the attack, adding that the militants’ primary objective appeared to be the destruction of the thermal camera.
Hawija and surrounding areas of Kirkuk province have previously witnessed ISIS activity, including attacks on security forces and military positions. The district was among the areas seized by ISIS in 2014 before Iraqi forces and allied militias recaptured it in 2017.
Despite the group’s loss of its territorial stronghold in Iraq, ISIS sleeper cells remain active in parts of the country, particularly in remote and mountainous areas, carrying out hit-and-run attacks against security forces.
Later, the Kurdistan24 correspondent reported that a group of ISIS militants was surrounded by security forces after attacking a PMF military base in Hawija district.
