US State Department Tells Kurdistan24: Washington Condemns Houthi Attacks, Reaffirms Saudi Security Commitment
The State Department reaffirms Washington’s commitment to Saudi security and says it is closely coordinating with Riyadh as Trump considers whether to join Saudi military action against the Iran-backed group
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The United States has strongly condemned recent Houthi missile attacks targeting Saudi airports and civilian infrastructure, reaffirming its commitment to the kingdom’s security as President Donald Trump considers whether Washington will join Saudi strikes against the Iran-backed group.
In an exclusive statement to Kurdistan24 on Saturday, a US State Department spokesperson told Rahim Rashidi, Kurdistan24’s Washington bureau chief, that Washington was concerned about the latest Houthi attacks, which have caused civilian casualties.
“The United States strongly condemns the Houthis’ terrorist attacks against airports and civilian infrastructure, which have resulted in the deaths and injuries of civilians,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also emphasized the strategic partnership between Washington and Riyadh, reiterating that the United States stands firmly alongside Saudi Arabia in confronting Houthi terrorism.
“The United States stands firmly with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting Houthi terrorism. We are in very close consultation and coordination with our Saudi partners and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the security of the Kingdom,” the spokesperson said.
The statement came after an attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday prompted Saudi authorities to suspend operations and emergency medical services to mobilize across the capital.
Saudi authorities confirmed that several people were injured, while a diplomatic source attributed the attack to a missile fired by the Houthis.
Trump Weighs Joining Saudi Strikes
Separately, Trump said Saturday that he would soon decide whether the United States would join Saudi military strikes against the Houthis following the attack on Riyadh’s airport.
“We may. We're going to look at it. We just found out about the recent attack, so we'll make a decision,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding, “We move very quickly.”
Trump’s remarks indicate that Washington is considering a possible expansion of its military involvement as Houthi attacks threaten Saudi civilian infrastructure and regional security.
The US president did not announce a final decision on whether American forces would participate in the strikes.
The latest developments come amid renewed fighting in Yemen following the collapse of a United Nations-brokered truce and an escalation of the broader Middle Eastern conflict.
The Houthis have repeatedly targeted Saudi airports, oil facilities, and maritime assets, while Saudi Arabia supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Washington’s latest statement underscores its continued security partnership with Riyadh, although whether the United States will directly join Saudi military operations against the Houthis remains unresolved.
