ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iran is hosting a major regional security gathering in Tehran on Monday bringing together Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister, Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir, and Türkiye’s intelligence chief for a meeting with the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, as Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister confirmed separately that a meeting between representatives of Mecca Alliance member countries and Iranian officials is also being held in Tehran today as part of efforts to reduce tensions between the parties to the crisis.

“This meeting is an Iranian initiative and we hope it will lead to a stable and calm region,” Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said.

Our strategy is achieving regional security and confronting any foreign intervention and external influence.

Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister confirmed that the visit of the Mecca Alliance delegation to Tehran is taking place within the framework of efforts to reduce tensions between the parties to the crisis, in what amounts to a direct Saudi-Iran diplomatic engagement at a senior level on the same day as the broader security summit.

The Mecca Alliance

The Mecca Alliance, formally known as the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition, groups 41 Muslim-majority nations under Saudi leadership with a mandate covering counterterrorism and regional security. The alliance’s delegation visiting Tehran on the same day as Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister and the other senior security officials underlines the multilateral and multi-track nature of Monday’s diplomatic activity in the Iranian capital, with both bilateral and coalition-level Saudi-Iran engagement occurring simultaneously.

The Significance

The simultaneous presence of Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister, Pakistan’s Army Chief, Türkiye’s intelligence chief, and a Mecca Alliance delegation in Tehran represents one of the most consequential single-day diplomatic gatherings since the US-Iran conflict began in February 2026. Saudi Arabia and Iran have been on opposite sides of the most intense regional confrontation in decades, with Houthi missile debris falling on Mecca and Medina as recently as Saturday. Pakistan has been one of the two primary US-Iran mediators, with General Munir having visited Tehran just days ago. Türkiye’s intelligence chief’s presence signals Ankara’s active engagement in the resolution track alongside FM Fidan’s earlier calls for Hormuz freedom of navigation.

Iran’s framing of the summit as aimed at building regional internal security and confronting foreign intervention is a direct articulation of Tehran’s consistent strategic proposition that regional security must be achieved by regional countries themselves without external powers, specifically the United States. Iranian FM Araghchi stated publicly Sunday that for peace and stability in the region, the presence of foreign forces must end completely.

The gathering arrives as US intelligence agencies have warned that Iranian plots against Americans have reached advanced stages, Trump said Saturday he may strike Iran as soon as after the midterms, and the US has more than 50,000 troops in the Middle East with a third aircraft carrier en route.
