Qatar FM: Iran Must Show Good Faith And Stop Threatening Gulf States
Qatar says Saudi and Mecca Coalition efforts complement its mediation with Pakistan to end the Washington-Tehran crisis, calling for a new regional security system that respects state sovereignty.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Qatar's Foreign Ministry stated Tuesday that a Qatari delegation visiting Tehran is conducting mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating the current crisis, that the region requires a new regional security architecture respecting the sovereignty of states, and that for these mediation efforts to succeed, Iran must demonstrate good faith and cease threats against Gulf states.
"The visit of a Qatari delegation to Tehran is taking place as part of efforts to mediate and de-escalate the current crisis," the Foreign Ministry said. "The region requires a new regional security architecture that respects the sovereignty of states. These mediation efforts focus on de-escalation, aiming to resolve the crisis between Washington and Tehran through peaceful means."
Qatar confirmed that consultations with regional and international partners are ongoing with the goal of achieving a definitive end to the crisis between Washington and Tehran. It stated that the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the Mecca Coalition countries complement the initiatives of Qatar and Pakistan, placing all active mediation tracks within a unified regional framework.
Qatar's explicit public statement that Iran must demonstrate good faith and cease threats against Gulf states is the most direct Qatari condition placed on Tehran in any public statement since the conflict began. As the primary channel for carrying Iran's seven-condition Hormuz proposal to Washington, Qatar has until now maintained a carefully neutral public posture. Tuesday's statement represents a notable shift, placing a behavioral condition on Iran publicly while simultaneously reaffirming the mediation framework.
The statement arrives as Tehran hosted a quadrilateral security summit on Monday with Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister, Pakistan's Army Chief, and Türkiye's intelligence chief, and as the Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed its Defense Minister's Tehran visit was aimed at encouraging dialogue within the Mecca Agreement framework. Qatar's framing of Saudi Arabia's efforts as complementary rather than competing with its own mediation signals a coordinated multilateral approach rather than parallel competing tracks.
