U.S. Reaffirms Support for a Strong and Resilient Kurdistan Region

“The United States supports a strong and resilient Iraqi Kurdistan Region, which remains a foundational pillar of the broader U.S.-Iraq relationship,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The United States has reaffirmed its support for a strong and resilient Kurdistan Region, describing it as a foundational pillar of the broader U.S.-Iraq relationship, while calling on all parties to work constructively to strengthen Iraq’s state institutions.

In a response to Kurdistan24’s email inquiry on Thursday, a U.S. State Department spokesperson said Washington remained committed to its partners across Iraq who are working to build a sovereign, stable, and prosperoU.S. country.

“The United States supports a strong and resilient Iraqi Kurdistan Region, which remains a foundational pillar of the broader U.S.-Iraq relationship,” the spokesperson said in a statement provided on background.

The spokesperson also stressed that Washington encourages all parties to work swiftly and constructively on issues that strengthen Iraq’s institutions, enabling the country to become a reliable partner to the United States and the wider region.

The U.S. has long maintained a strategic relationship with the Kurdistan Region, particularly in areas of security, political cooperation, and economic development. The Kurdistan Region has also played a significant role in the international coalition's campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS), serving as a key partner in efforts to counter terrorism and promote regional security.

Relations between Erbil and Baghdad remain an important dimension of Iraq’s political and institutional stability, with issues including budget allocations, oil and gas management, and the implementation of constitutional provisions continuing to shape ties between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government.

Washington has consistently emphasized the importance of a stable, sovereign, and unified Iraq, alongside strong institutions and constructive cooperation among the country's political components.

The State Department's latest remarks underscore continued U.S. support for the Kurdistan Region's position within Iraq and its importance to the broader U.S.-Iraq partnership.
