Attack on Khor Mor Gas Field Halts Production, Causes Major Fire
Harem Jaff, a Kurdistan24 correspondent, reported that the attack targeted the gas field in the Qadir Karam subdistrict of Chamchamal district.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – An attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaimani’s Chamchamal district late Sunday night caused extensive material damage to its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production unit, triggering a massive fire and forcing a complete halt to gas production at the facility.
Harem Jaff, a Kurdistan24 correspondent, reported that the attack targeted the gas field in the Qadir Karam subdistrict of Chamchamal district.
The attack struck the facility’s “Old Field” section, which is responsible for daily LPG production. Jaff said the section had not previously been targeted.
The strike ignited a major fire inside the facility, with flames visible across much of the garmiyan independent administration. The affected production unit sustained significant material damage.
According to the correspondent, only one attack occurred. An emergency alarm sounded before the impact, allowing employees to evacuate to designated safe areas and shelters. No casualties were reported among the facility’s employees or security personnel.
Jaff added that security authorities had not yet officially disclosed the location or direction from which the attack originated. However, eyewitnesses and facility employees confirmed that the strike directly hit the gas production unit. Firefighting teams were working to contain the blaze.
Meanwhile, the attack has raised concerns over electricity supplies across Iraq, as gas deliveries to several power stations have been disrupted.
Omed Ahmad, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Electricity, told Kurdistan24 that the ministry would activate hydropower stations at the Dukan and Darbandikhan dams, alongside alternative-fuel power stations, to mitigate the impact of the disruption.
He said the measures were aimed at preventing a nationwide blackout and ensuring that essential facilities, including hospitals and water stations, receive priority electricity supplies.
Ahmad said the full impact of the electricity shortage was expected to become apparent from midnight on Sunday. He added that the restoration of normal electricity supplies would depend on the resumption of gas production at the Khor Mor field.
