ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Militants from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) opened fire on Peshmerga at Mount Matina in Duhok province, the forces’ chief of staff said.

Peshmerga Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Jamal Mohammad told Kurdistan 24 that PKK gunmen fired on Zeravani Peshmerga vehicles in the Amedi district of Duhok around 8:30 Saturday morning.

The Peshmerga returned fire and there were no casualties, Mohammed said.

It is the most recent attack carried out by the PKK against the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga, some of which have caused casualties, including a rocket attack in June that killed five and injured four others near Bari-Sili village.

The PKK has been locked in a decades-long conflict against Ankara over Kurdish rights in Turkey that has led to tens of thousands of deaths on both sides. The group is headquartered in the Kurdistan Region's Qandil Mountains, mostly in rural areas along the Turkish and Iranian borders.

Officials from both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have repeatedly called on Turkey and the PKK to take their fight away from areas populated by civilians.
