ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Masoud Barzani congratulated the Kurdistan Women's Union on the 69th anniversary of its establishment.

Barzani congratulated the secretary and members of the secretariat office in the Union.

"I extend my warmest congratulations to you and to all the members of your organization and all the women of Kurdistan," he said.

He added that the Kurdistan Women's Union has successfully enabled women to participate in political and societal life in Kurdistan, one of the most important achievements of the revolution, which played a role in consolidating and strengthening women's rights at various stages.

Barzani noted that the Kurdistan Women's Union is an organization that supported the Peshmerga, the revolution, and the Kurdish struggle. It performed its duty to raise women's awareness and defend their rights.

Barzani concluded his statement by saying that the Kurdistan Women's Union should now work within the framework of a culture of coexistence, civility, equality, and the elimination of family and societal violence to promote national, patriotic, and democratic ideals.

Ever since its formation in 1952, the KWU has actively participated in the Kurdish national struggle. It has fought for the realization of the human and democratic rights of the people of Kurdistan.

According to the organization, its mission "is to fight oppression and discrimination against Kurdish women, fighting "for overall better treatment of Kurdish people... as well as an end to discrimination against women in the patriarchal Kurdish society."

Its programs include "education, job training, and other livelihood opportunities to empower Kurdish women," as well as running a health care center that provides basic services to poor families and "holds regular gatherings to empower and educate women about their rights within the KDP party and beyond."
