Kurdish Cultural Center of Illinois aims to create a community center
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The non-profit Kurdish Cultural Center of Illinois (the KCCI) established in 2017 is looking for donations to set up a community center in the US State of Illinois.
The KCCI wants to establish a center where it can hold language classes, govend (Kurdish dancing) lessons, and refugee outreach programs.

"Currently, we don't have a physical location. However, we feel that we can achieve our goals to a higher level if we have a physical location to host events, meetings, community gatherings, and so on," Betul Serbest, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, told Kurdistan 24.
"Specifically, we plan to start Kurdish language lessons and govend classes once we have a space," she added. "In the past, we've had these types of initiatives, but they are hard to maintain without a consistent physical location we can rely on."
She also noted that there is a sizable Kurdish community living in Illinois.
"Most of the people are from Bakur, but we have Kurds from Bashur, Rojava, and Rojhelat as well," she said.
The KCCI is already "collecting money to purchase a center, and the spaces we are interested in purchasing are in the $220,000 to $230,000 range," Serbest said. "Currently, we have collected approximately $62,000, but as you can see, that is still pretty far from our goal."
The Kurdish Cultural Center of Illinois is a not-for-profit organization established in 2017. It says it is "dedicated to the bringing of people of interest in Kurdish Culture together, and building relationships within American communities across the States regardless of their background."
