Erbil agriculture directorate urges export support amid egg production surplus
Highlighting the surplus of approximately 7,000 cartons, Murad emphasized the importance of exporting the excess eggs to assist project owners and alleviate market saturation.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Director General of Agriculture in Erbil revealed that the city's daily egg production exceeds local demand, emphasizing the need to facilitate export procedures to alleviate surplus and support project owners.
Sayed Hemin Murad, Director General of Agriculture in Erbil, disclosed to Kurdistan24 on Sunday, April 28, that despite the operation of 18 out of 20 egg production projects in Erbil, daily production amounts to 9,000 to 10,000 cartons, surpassing the city's daily requirement of 2,500 to 3,000 cartons.
Highlighting the surplus of approximately 7,000 cartons, Murad emphasized the importance of exporting the excess eggs to assist project owners and alleviate market saturation.
In a bid to bolster domestic production, the Iraqi Council of Ministers recently approved a decision to increase customs duties on imported eggs. Effective from May 2, the decision entails imposing an additional 50% customs duty on imported eggs, in addition to the existing 20% duty, with instructions issued for its prompt implementation.
Economist Prof. Nabil al-Marsoumi underscored the significance of supporting domestic egg production, noting that Iraq consumes approximately seven billion eggs annually, with imports amounting to around $900 million.
"The decision to raise customs duties aims to bolster domestic production at a time when Iraq's annual egg imports reach $900 million, catering to the consumption of seven billion eggs annually," stated Marsoumi on social media.
The move to increase customs duties is viewed as a strategic measure to incentivize domestic egg production, enhance self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within the agriculture sector.
