Kurds sympathize with Nice attack victims

As the main forces fighting the Islamic State (IS) and as victims of terror, Kurds empathize with the French, strongly condemn the Nice attack, and send their condolences to the families of the victims.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – As the main forces fighting the Islamic State (IS) and as victims of terror, Kurds empathize with the French, strongly condemn the Nice attack, and send their condolences to the families of the victims.

On Thursday, at least 84 people were reported dead and hundreds wounded in the French city of Nice when a man drove a truck into a crowd celebrating France’s main national holiday.

Following the attack, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani released a statement strongly condemning the terrorist attack on behalf of the people of the Kurdistan Region.

“Terrorists are the enemy of humanity and freedom, and they will target any part of the world they reach,” said Barzani.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s statement echoed President's words. “We strongly condemn the attack that targeted the civilians of Nice on the French National Day.”

“This terrorist attack shows that the international community is under threat, and they should eradicate terrorist groups in every part of the world,” read the KRG statement.

Moreover, the Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani tweeted on his official account, “My condolences to the people of France for the heinous attack in #Nice. We stand with you in the fight against terrorism.”

The Kurdish opposition party in Turkey, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) also sent condolences to the victims’ families. “We condemn the barbaric attack carried out in France in the strongest terms. We are in solidarity with French people,” HDP tweeted.

The regional president in Nice Christian Estrosi stated that at least 10 children were among the 84 dead. According to the French authorities, the terrorist was Mohamad Lahouaiej Bouhlel. He was a 31-year-old French-Tunisian delivery driver.

The Democratic Union Party (PYD), the main Kurdish ruling party of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) also denounced the massacre of Nice and offered sympathies to the people of France and the French government.

Furthermore, Kurds in different parts of the world expressed their condolences through social media networks, sending thoughts and prayers.

France is one of the active members of the international coalitions against the Islamic State (IS).

On November 13, 2015, France announced a state of emergency after the terrorist attacks targeted a crowded concert hall, a soccer stadium and terrace restaurant in Paris. The attack killed at least 130 people and hundreds more were wounded.
