ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – An explosion hit an area outside of Diyarbakir city on Monday where several people were injured.

According to the security sources, the explosion was due to a car bomb that targeted a police station in Diyarbakir – Bismil road.

The Diyarbakir Governor’s office said the blast killed two poilice officers and wounded 25 people including eight officers.

There was also extensive damage caused to the police station.

Following the incident, ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the wounded people to the nearest hospitals.

The explosion took place on the road between Diyarbakir and the district of Bismil, southeastern Turkey, security sources at the site revealed.

Turkish media claim that the explosion had been carried out by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters who had restarted clashes with the Turkish army since last year.

However, the group has not yet claimed responsibility for the violence.

Violence between the PKK-armed wings and the Turkish troops deepened in the southeast of Turkey, known as Kurdistan of Turkey (Bakur) following the July 2015 government elections.

Turkey, the European Union, and the United States have labeled the PKK a terrorist organization.

The group had taken up arms against the Turkish state in 1984. Since then, over 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have lost their lives.
