ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish Peshmerga forces recently confiscated a unique type of weapon in the east of Mosul the Islamic State (IS) extremists had created in the area.
The weapon is used for long-distance targets and is designed similar to a sniper rifle but much larger in size.
Peshmerga officers told Kurdistan24 the weapon was confiscated during the current Kurdish forces’ advances to push the jihadist group back to Mosul from the east.
Kurdish Peshmerga forces launched the Mosul military operation on Oct. 17 and so far they have liberated large swaths of territory from the east and north of Mosul.
IS took control of the city in June 2014 and expanded to other areas in Iraq. However, the group has lost massive amounts of territory and continues to shrink.
Moreover, Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces with the support of the US-led coalition jets have already begun the offensive of clearing the city from IS.
