Suicide car bomb target security checkpoint in Iraq's Najaf

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) - On Sunday morning, a suicide car bomb targeted a security checkpoint in the town of al-Qadisyia in Najaf city.
People in the area told local media that several gunmen driving the cars in the market of Shaalan in the town of Qadisyia opened fire on people before detonating themselves in the security checkpoint.
Kurdistan24 could not verify the detail independently.
Following the explosion, ambulances were dispatched to the area and transferred the injured to the nearby hospitals.
In an online statement, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack killed six and injured 25 people, a police source said.
On social media, people posted images and videos showing smoke rising from the site of the explosion. Also, some of the images showed amputated human bodies left near the explosion area.
Moreover, two explosions on Saturday morning targeted a busy commercial area in central Baghdad, leaving nearly 21 dead and over 40 injured, police and medics said.
Both explosions occurred in the crowded neighborhood of al-Sinak.
After the first blast, people began rescuing the injured. The second explosion targeted the same area, killing and wounding more people, police said.
According to a Baghdad security statement, two “terrorists” wearing suicide vests blew themselves up in the middle of the neighborhood’s crowded shopping district.
Following the attacks, the IS claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group often targets civilians in the capital of Iraq.
