MOSUL, Iraq (Kurdistan24) – On Friday, Iraqi counter-terrorism (CT) forces entered Mosul University and secured al-Hurriya bridge as part of the operation to liberate the city from the Islamic State (IS).
In a statement, the Commander of Mosul operation Lt. General Abdul-Amir Yarallah said that the security forces advanced toward Faysaliya and al-Sadriya neighborhoods in the center of the city of Mosul.
Yarallah mentioned that the CT forces have also retaken Nineveh governorate and council buildings in Mosul.
The commander stated that Iraqi troops had stormed Mosul University in the north of the city and liberated a few buildings from the IS.
The statement informed that Iraqi CT forces advanced toward the presidential palaces in the north as well as Nabi Younis neighborhood in the center.
The IS extremists on Friday detonated the remaining bridges to prevent the advances of the Iraqi security after the forces secured the second bridge known as al-Hurriya and al-Jumhurriya which is located on the Tigris River that connects east of Mosul to the west of the city.
IS occupied Mosul in June 2014 and shortly after they expanded to other parts of Iraq. Since then, the group has lost control of most of the territory it controlled.
Iraqi and Peshmerga forces launched a military operation on October 17 to free Mosul, the self-proclaimed capital of the IS. So far, the forces have liberated over 85 percent of the eastern part of Mosul and continue to break fierce resistance by the IS insurgents.
