WATCH: Over 1,000 minority group Peshmerga graduates now able to protect northeastern Mosul

Over 1,000 Peshmerga soldiers from various ethnic and religious background completed their military training.

DUHOK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – On Thursday, over 1,000 Peshmerga soldiers from various ethnic and religious background completed their military training.

“The graduated Peshmerga are Ezidis, Kakayi, Shabaks, Christians, and Arabs. They are in total 1,164 soldiers,” Major General Aziz Waisy, Commander of Peshmerga elite forces (Zeravani), told Kurdistan 24.

He noted that the units would be responsible for protecting the predominantly Christian area of Nineveh Plains, north and the northeast of Mosul.

A parade took place at the military base of Khinis, located in Duhok’s Shekhan area.

Thousands more Peshmerga soldiers are expected to receive training in the coming months, designed to empower them to defend their local communities, especially in the disputed territories.
