Masrour Barzani discusses IS activities, new Iraqi gov., bilateral ties with Russian envoy
Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, on Sunday discussed the activities of the Islamic State (IS) in disputed territories and the formation of the new federal government of Iraq with the Russian Ambassador, Maksim Maksimov.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), Masrour Barzani, on Sunday discussed the activities of the Islamic State (IS) in disputed territories and the formation of the new federal government of Iraq with the Russian Ambassador, Maksim Maksimov.
In a meeting held in Erbil, they touched upon political and military developments in the region in general, including the new government in the Kurdistan Region, resolving disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, and historical ties between the Kurdistan Region and Russia, according to Barzani’s press office.
Barzani welcomed Iraq’s new government formation “as a positive step in the political process and @AdilAbdAlMahdi’s commitment to a new chapter in Erbil-Baghdad ties,” he tweeted on his official Twitter account.

Movements of the extremist group in disputed territories were another key issue the senior Kurdish official highlighted during the meeting with Maksimov, the KRSC’s press office stated.
Barzani and the Russian envoy stressed the importance of strengthening ties between Erbil and Moscow.
Maksimov noted that the Russian political leadership takes into great consideration Kurdish affairs and the Kurdistan Region’s position within the evolving situation in the Middle East, according to the KRSC’s statement.
The Kurdish semi-autonomous region over the past few years has considerably developed its ties, economically and politically, with Russia, namely in the energy sector. According to the Russian envoy, Moscow aims to improve relations with Erbil in all sectors.
On Sunday, the Russian envoy also met with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, following up on the subjects of the new Iraqi government, ties between the two capitals, and developing bilateral ties in the fields of energy, agriculture, industry, and trade.
